It’s a good idea to avoid driving after consuming alcohol products. While some people will say that one or two drinks are okay if you’re going to drive, this could vary from person to person. Depending on one person’s alcohol tolerance, their body chemistry, and the potency of their drinks, the legal limit could be met much quicker than one may realize. The last thing you want to do is risk hurting other people or ending up in jail because of a DUI charge. I knew people in college who frequently drove “buzzed,” but one of them ended up with a DUI charge because he failed the breathalyzer test after he was pulled over by the police. And little did my other friend know, but you can also be charged with a DUI if a cop catches you smoking cannabis in your car. Even if you have a medical marijuana card in a state with legal medical marijuana, you can still possibly face a DUI charge if the police officer who catches you wants to make an example out of your mistake. That’s why I steer clear of consuming large doses of THC enriched cannabis products if I know I need to leave the house anytime soon. Otherwise I wait to use cannabis to this degree until I know I’m home for the night permanently. This is essential for staying safe behind the wheel of my car, not just for myself but also every single person who could come into contact with my car if I lost control. It’s a scary thought, but it’s sobering as well.

The THC content isn’t as important as the terpene content in most marijuana products
You could compare two different batches of cannabis with one having 10% more THC in it, but it might feel weaker than the lower THC batch if the latter has more terpenes in it than the former.
Too many people will assume that one batch of beer is better than another just because the alcohol content is higher in one versus the other. It’s not just flavor that sets apart two different kinds of alcohol. There are other compounds found within beer and wine that can affect the subjective experience of the person consuming them. Those compounds are referred to as terpenes, and they’re also found in fruits, vegetables, flowers, grain, and other natural sources. Terpenes not only provide flavor, but also subjective psychoactive effects. The terpenes have a synergistic effect with alcohol in the beer and wine, making each more potent with particular blends with unique terpene profiles. Oddly enough, cannabis is the same way. You can’t get a full “entourage effect” out of just cannabinoids like THC and CBD, you also need the terpenes present that come from the original plant in the first place. That’s why the terpene content is often more representative of a cannabis product’s effects and potency than merely the THC content. You could compare two different batches of cannabis with one having 10% more THC in it, but it might feel weaker than the lower THC batch if the latter has more terpenes in it than the former. When I’m buying cannabis flower products or cannabis concentrates, I always ask for the terpene content before making my final decision. That’s how I end up having the best luck with the various cannabis products that I source from local marijuana dispensaries. Cannabis flower products with over 3% terpenes in them are particularly potent compared to 1% batches.
The cannabis dispensaries in my county can only stay open until 7pm
I live in a fairly strict county when it comes to rules and laws governing nightlife and other things that young people enjoy.
It started with the laws restricting skate parks from operating within the area, effectively banning kids from being kids, even within the confines of a small gated park. Then the county started creating these arcane noise ordinance laws that effectively prevented outdoor bars from operating with any form of live music, even if they tried to keep the volume down. I was working as a freelance journalist at the time I had aspirations to work for a music magazine in the city, so I took the chance on reporting on the local music scene. One of my first articles was about the noise ordinance laws and how it was effectively killing our local music scene here in this city. A lot of bands who live here will drive an hour to get to the closest metropolitan city because they have an established music scene that isn’t under threat from ridiculous noise ordinance laws. It’s particularly bad nowadays now that we have legal cannabis in this state. Because of how the state law is written, cities and municipalities are able to craft their own rules regarding how dispensaries operate within the boundaries of the law. That means that they can decide how late they’re open everyday. It’s frustrating when your county forces all of the cannabis dispensaries to close at 7pm, regardless of what day of the week it is in reality. I wish they could stay open until 9pm like they do in neighboring counties.
Cannabis concentrates can be intense for new marijuana users
When I first tried cannabis when I was 17 years old, it was fairly weak and only gave me a few effects at most.
- On the other hand, it was free and I was thankful that my friend was willing to give me a joint to smoke on my own at my house.
That wasn’t something that he needed to do, but he was nice enough to share with me at the time. By the time I got to try cannabis with a different friend later down the road, I was finally able to experience high quality, indoor-grown weed that was free of seeds and sticky with oil trichomes. It was a jarring experience because I got much higher than I ever thought possible and it scared me at first. But the entire time my body felt amazing and I had this detached feeling from reality that I couldn’t really place in my mind at the time I was experiencing it. I wish I could experience cannabis like this again, because now that I’m 30 and I’ve been smoking daily for 13 years, I have a noticeable tolerance for cannabis. My tolerance is so high that I have resorted to using cannabis concentrates instead of cannabis flower products like I was consuming in the past. Cannabis concentrates often have over 70% THC opposed to the 20% THC you find in many batches of cannabis flower buds. That’s why it’s important for new marijuana users to understand how strong cannabis concentrates are before they decide to dip their toes in the deep end for the first time.
The state rules on cannabis are extremely strict about product packaging
I realize that product packaging is important for consumers, especially when it comes to properly labeling food ingredients.
Imagine being unlucky enough to have severe food allergies with absolutely no way to confirm whether or not a particular item at the grocery store is safe.
My sister relied on nut warnings to avoid getting exposed to food that could throw her into the hospital. If she picked up a random piece of food that didn’t have a nut warning on the label but contained lots of nuts, it could be a life or death situation in a matter of seconds. Those who don’t have these problems might see the warnings as trivial, but they don’t see the people whose very lives depend on those proper label warnings. When it comes to the legal cannabis market in my state, it’s regulated by my state’s Department of Health. As you’d expect, they have numerous rules and laws designating what kind of packaging and product labeling is allowed. It has gotten so extreme that you are forced to use white and opaque packaging with absolutely no translucency of any kind. That means white mylar bags, white plastic jars, and white glass jars. All text is in black only. It’s extremely boring for our cannabis market, but the one part about the packaging rules I agree with is having proper THC, CBD, and terpene percentages for the customer to see. It would be even more helpful to name the particular terpenes so the customer has an idea of what kind of strain they’re about to get before they hand over money across the counter at their favorite cannabis dispensary.
