For our anniversary, my wife booked us a table at the most exclusive restaurant in town.

She had made the reservation three months earlier, but never told me about it so it could be a surprise for me.

This place is incredibly busy, and it takes that long just to get a table for dinner! When she told me that we were going to the cannabis cafe for our big dinner, I was beside myself with excitement. I had been wanting to go there ever since it opened last year, but as I said the seats were highly in demand. Dressed to the nines, my wife and I took an Uber to the cannabis cafe for the meal of a lifetime. We knew better than to drive, because the meal would involve so many cannabis products it would be illegal and dangerous for us to drive back home afterward. The first course was a light appetizer of a crab salad, with a dusting of crystalized cannabis over the top of it. I couldn’t detect a hint of marijuana flavor in the salad, but by the time I finished eating it I was already buzzed. The main course was a pan-fried fish filet, accompanied by a green sauce that blended three different cannabis strains along with pine nuts and herbs. For dessert we had a marijuana sorbet topped with caramel made from cannabis oil. The meal contained so much cannabis that I was still high when I woke up the next morning! I don’t even remember taking an Uber back home from the cannabis cafe.

In the past, I always loved going out for my birthday.

I would start with a big birthday dinner, and then hit the bars and clubs to get free drinks all night.

This is a college town, filled with hard-partying young people who love buying drinks for a birthday boy, even if we have never met each other before. This year I was turning 50 and did not feel like going out on the town. My age was catching up with me, and I no longer wanted to hang out with young people, even if I did get free drinks. Instead I decided to have a low-key birthday, and I went to the local cannabis dispensary. This shop is the only place in town that has a cannabis dispensary as well as a smoking lounge. Remember how I said I would get free drinks at the bar for my birthday? The same thing happened at the cannabis dispensary smokers lounge, because everyone wanted to give me a hit of what they were smoking. That evening I was given three different cannabis edibles, two vape pens, and more hits of weed than I can recall. Someone who worked at the cannabis dispensary was smart enough to take my keys, and one of the people there gave me a ride home at the end of the night. I really loved getting all that free cannabis, but what I loved even more was the sense of community I felt at the dispensary. In the cannabis community, we take good care of each other.

My wife Jamie told me she was planning a surprise party for my birthday.

I asked her why she told me, if it was supposed to be a surprise.

Jamie smartly answered that I would eventually figure out something was going on behind my back. She told me about the party so that I wouldn’t sneak around and try to figure out what was happening. I told her I didn’t want a party, because I was turning fifty which was incredibly depressing for me. Jamie told me to shut up and let her do something nice for me. I shouldn’t have complained, because it turns out she set up my party at the smokers lounge in the local cannabis dispensary. I didn’t even know you could host private events at the cannabis dispensary! Even though I knew I was getting a surprise party I was still caught off guard because I never expected it to be at the marijuana shop. Jamie and I went in to use the annual birthday discount offered at the cannabis dispensary. Anyone who makes a cannabis purchase on their birthday gets 25% off. Imagine my genuine surprise when I found all my closest friends waiting for me in the cannabis dispensary! We all went out back to the screen-in patio used as a smokers lounge, where we ate cannabis-infused cupcakes and washed it down with hemp beer. Have you ever had hemp beer? It’s awful! I have to say that Jamie did a remarkable thing, because I never expected my party to be at the cannabis dispensary.

I remember I was at a party some years back and we were playing some sort of board game about secrets. I can’t remember the name of that particular board game. But it was definitely about trying to figure out if someone was telling an actual secret or was totally bluffing. And when I said that I had never used recreational marijuana, there weren’t even any questions. Everyone immediately called me out for bluffing! I was sort of stunned and not because I’m any sort of goodie two shoes by any measure. No, I was stunned because it turns out that I’m literally one of the only people I know who didn’t use recreational marijuana when they were younger. And it so stunned everyone that I’d never smoked marijuana. I was an athlete in college and had I tested positive for cannabis, the scholarship I had earned was gone. So I had incentive to stick to beers. These days, all of that has changed now that recreational marijuana is legal here. I wasn’t scared of cannabis but I wanted to know more about indica and sativa products in particular. My friends told me that I’d probably really enjoy sativa strains. Thankfully, the folks at the local cannabis spot are so kind, patient and super knowledgeable about cannabis products. They gave me all sorts of information sources so I could indeed learn more about cannabis. I was amazed by the history of this plant and all the benefits people have taken away from using cannabis. It was so nice to actually enjoy some sativa strains with friends. But I still have a winning answer to that board game should I ever play it again.

Of course, it helps that I have a deep passion for cannabis.

I’ve enjoyed recreational marijuana for more than thirty years now. The fact that it’s now legal to use recreational marijuana in our state is almost overwhelming for me. I’m just so grateful that I lived long enough to see this outcome. There are no more worries about getting busted for possession. And I now now exactly whether I’m getting sativa, indica or a hybrid strain. Not to mention that the THC content is now clearly labeled. The weight of worrying about how to find marijuana is now over. I no longer have to ration every tenth of a gram of cannabis when I’m running low. So there are so many reasons to be so thankful when it comes to having legal weed. But I have to say, the marijuana business went to a whole other level around here when the local cannabis cafe opened. Sure, it’s a cool coffee shop with awesome space to sit outside. But it’s the cannabis edibles they make in this place that are just simply mind blowing. From space cake to the old school pot brownie, they make it all right there on site. And there are so many cannabis edibles to choose from. There are even these delicate, beautiful pastries that are made with cannabis. Shoot, this marijuana business even has classes on how to cook with marijuana. I learned the proper way of making cannabis butter just last week. I almost feel like I’m living a dream with something like the local cannabis spot. But it’s actually a reality and I couldn’t be more grateful.
